Theater Scum: Death Day & Marshall

We could have had a brand-new Jason Voorhees film this weekend had Paramount not pulled the plug in what I hope turns out to be a daily ass-kicking around there. So in return, we get a new-ish? horror film and a prestigious biopic.

Happy Death Day

From the hot horror producer of the year Jason Blum comes this weekā€™s sole major horror release: Groundhog Day meets every other slasher flick Happy Death Day. Every so many years, one project or another seems to fulfill the quotient ā€œGroundhog Day + ___ = ???ā€ but this is the first I can recall that has a horror tinge. Blum has a good track record, especially this year after Split and Get Out, so Iā€™ll be interested to see if this exceeds the low expectations I already have for it.

Marshall

Chadwick Boseman stars as young Thurgood Marshall as he tries to stamp out bigotry in this ā€œbased on true eventsā€ film. Long before becoming Americaā€™s first black Supreme Court Justice, Marshall was an accomplished lawyer fighting the status quo of discrimination, including cases such as portrayed here with a black man unfairly accused of a crime for his skin color. All in all, looks really decent and Iā€™ll definitely check it out ... but why is Josh Gad in this movie? Ugh, I despise Josh Gad. See here for more info.
