The Power of Christ Compels You to Watch The Exorcist

In spite of positive critical acclaim for it’s first season, The Exorcist was not very likely to be renewed due to low ratings on Friday nights. But miraculously, Fox tapped the series created by Jeremy Slater for a second season pretty early.

Undoubtedly, many viewers are probably hesitant about a TV reboot of a popular film since many are garbage and end up canceled pretty quickly. The Exorcist though ties in with its originating series nicely but is not just a beat by beat remake. It is actually a surprisingly good continuation of the films with a number of elements that would surprise you on network TV.

The first season prominently featured Geena Davis in her return to television but the real stars of the show are Alfonso Herrera and Ben Daniels as two priests in the thick of the action, one formerly disgraced after a failed exorcism, the other who walked away from a cozy congregation to chase after demons. The interaction between the two, the old priest and the new if you will, drives the series as they battle demonic spirits inhabiting hapless bystanders with all the risks you could imagine.

The first season featured a number of unnerving scenes and a fair amount of gore for network TV. While it is definitely worth a watch, the second season is a different chapter which thus far does not rely much on previous information to be just as creepily effective.

I’ve only seen the first (of three so far) episodes of this season but I’d strongly advise to consider it, especially if you are a fan of the good parts of the Exorcist series. If you are a fan of Exorcist II: The Heretic, probably just go watch Big Bang Theory or something instead.
