First, it just seemed that Dan Akyroyd was plain out of his mind. Then, Sony announced an all-female led Ghostbusters sequel/whatever. And now? Chaos.
The word yesterday that Sony is now planning a male-centric counterpart to Paul Feig's Ghostbusters: The Revenge* in cahoots with a new production company founded by Akyroyd and Ghostbusters Prime director Ivan Reitman is just plain weird. There was much fanfare regarding Feig's all female cast plucked from Gilmore Girls and SNL and apparently much misogyny from those who thought a new Ghostbusters movie was a good idea, as long as there weren't girls anywhere near it.
While I balked at the idea of the new female Ghostbusters film, my hesitation was more on the 'Why the hell are they making another one?' front and far less on 'eww, girls'. The new announcement though seems to intend to undercut Feig's film with a proper sequel since it has the backing of the original's principles.
Crazy old coot Akyroyd has talked for some time about building a Ghostbusters Universe similar to the immensely successful Marvel Comics movies or the less successful everything else. No doubt this is Sony's way of establishing that universe and cohering the Ghostbusters #brand but a move in such quick succession with the old new movie smacks of studio pandering to XY chromosome holders or sheer unadulterated desperation.
I'm not sure which would be more deplorable.
*Not the real title. At least I don't think.
