Yesterday, Hollywood Reporter broke that Amazon has partnered with Will Graham (Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle) and Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) to develop a series based on the the 1992 Penny Marshall film, A League of Their Own. While the series (or pilot) has been ordered, a “mini-writer’s room” has been established and scripts are being created for review. The series is not set to include the main characters from the film, such as Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, or Lori Petty.
While I typically am unnerved by the endless recycling of properties from movies to TV and back and forth, this project sounds like a winner. I love the original film and am not ashamed to admit I’ve cried watching it more times than not. While the film was mainly focused on Davis’ and Petty’s feuding sisters, there is a wealth of drama and entertainment to be derived from the 11 years the AAGPBL was active. I don’t typically follow baseball as closely as I did when I was a kid (the original film certainly played a part), but I will never turn down more baseball-based entertainment.
